Doctor Mark Benecke was born
in Germany, his main areas of professional interest lie in DNA typing, forensic entomology,
criminalistics and invertebrate zoology.
He received his Biologist Diploma, zoology, genetics, psychology theory in
1994, a year later his Biologist Diploma, DMA typing of nematode strains,
Grade A thesis and in 1997 he was awarded a PhD, DMA typing of biological
stains, summa cum laude.
At the University of Cologne he worked initially within the Institute for
Zoology (1995) then the Institute for Legal Medicine (1996). His work then
took him to the United States where he was Consultant and then Forensic Biologist
and Criminalist II in the Chief Medical Examiner's Office
in New York City. In 1999 he returned to work at the Institute of Zoology
of the University of Cologne and, since 2000, has worked for International
Forensic Research and Consulting, Germany.
As scientific consultant he has
worked for the Colombian Association of Legal Medicine, the Institute for
Legal Medicine Bogota, the Natural Sciences Research Institute of University
of Manila and the Genetics Department of Odessa University. The Doctor has
been Guest at the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy, Quantico, Virginia,
USA, The Anthropological Research Faculty (University of Tennessee), Visiting
Assistant Professor and Consultant to the Molecular Biology Department, University
of the Philippines, Assistant Visiting Professor of the Department of Molecular
Biology and Cell Biology, University for Medicine and Pharmacy, Hochiminh
City, Vietnam, Visiting Scientist at the Institute Nacional de Medicina Legal
y Ciencias Forenses, Bogota, Columbia and Guest Lecturer at Columbia University,
Chief Medical Examiner's Office, John Jay College for Criminal Justice, and
at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn, Freiburg and Konstanz, Germany and Singapore.
He has also been Guest Lecturer and Trainer at several police academies, including federal police units.
Doctor Benecke's publications include articles
and papers on forensic entomology, DNA and DMA typing, and zoological topics.
He is the author of four popular science books: "Encyclopedia of Scientists and Inventors" (1997), " The dream of eternal life. Biomedicine as a key to longevity" (1998, 2002), "Forensic Biology" (1999, 2001), "Criminal Cases of the 20th Century-A
Pitaval" (2002), co-editor of "Annals of Improbable Research" and the guest
editor of "Forensic Science International". He was the recipient of the Fortune
Scholarship, North Rhine Westphalia and a medal of honour by the German BDK (Association of the Criminal Police, 2002). Doctor Benecke is a Fellowof the Linnean Society of London and holds membership of the American Academy
of Forensic Sciences, the German Society for Legal Medicine, the German Zoological
Society, the Society of German Natural Scientists and Medical Doctors, the
International Academy of Legal Medicine, the International Society of Forensic
Genetics and the Colombian Society for Legal Medicine.
He was scientific
consultant to National Geographic TV's "Dracula Unearthed" production (2002).
