Big International Forensic Biology Training for Students (Summer Training) -- DO APPLY NOW!

  • Next Cologne (Germany) Trainings in 2017: Will be earliest announced in 2017

AGE RESTRICTION IS NOT TO BE DISCUSSED -- DO NOT ASK US IF YOU ARE OLDER

This is our "real" international super intense training for a small group of students of natural sciences. If you are interested, pls send an E-mail to: training@benecke.com. No lunch or other breaks, just forensic work. If you wish to attend the next training, register now for the waiting list.

Here are the forensic biology training rules

  • You must bring a valid student ID and a valid personal ID card. No cards, no entry. Also, send all this via postal service after we ask you.
  • You must speak English to attend. In 95% of the cases, international guests are present. We speak english only during the whole training.
  • You must write a one page application (IN ENGLISH) in which:

- you explain why you are scientifically interested in the topic (not movies, we do not care about movies)
- you tell us which scientific articles and books you read concering the matter at hand.

  • the one page application must be sent on paper to our postal box: Mark Benecke, Postfach 250411, 50520 Köln.
  • Age limits: 18 to 24 for students of natural sciences (valid student ID & state ID ("Perso") necessary) & very skilled pupils (good Facharbeit necessary)
  • Food and sleep: You will have to pay all for yourself, and organize everything for yourself. The lab is in the middle of the city, so no problem. Just use Google and book a room as centrally located as possible ;)
  • As selecting procedure, there will be a test and further questions concerning your application given to you via e-mail.
  • Read some of the articles here before the class starts. Really, do it.
  • You do not need to bring any lab stuff (no forceps, no dissecting material, no lenses).
  • Topics in 2016: blood & forensic entomology (determination and cases)!
  • Your main instructor in 2016 will be Tina, Mark will sneak in from time to time.
  • Your must give a speech on a forensic topic. We will talk to you about this once you are a participant.
  • Please bring your talk as a pdf-file - no other formats - just .pdf!
  • University students: Depending on your protocol, you will get a certificate (Schein) that is signed by Mark Benecke.
  • We will not hand out any other kind of "Bescheinigung", just a certificate concerning your participation if you deliver a good protocol.

Please note:

  • The certificate is accepted by most universities. However, talk to your professor beforehand ;)
  • We do not have any sponsors. After application, we will tell you where to send the money. There is no refund of the money, under absolutely no circumstance. The training is for free, the inscription is not.
  • There will be lots of reality and work in the training. If you prefer to sit around and just listen, do not apply.
  • Daily hours: 10 a.m. sharp to 6.30 p.m. sharp; there will be a super short lunch break (30-45 min), bakeries are around the corner
  • Absolutely NO BITCHING in the training! If you bitch, Mark will get you.
  • Please note that the training language is strictly english. This means that the protocol must be delivered in english, too.

Travel Info in German Text

Kursbeginn:

10:00 Uhr sharp

Doors open

9:45 hrs (a.m.) sharp

Kursende:

18:30 Uhr sharp

Kursort:

Training starts

10:00 hrs (a.m.) sharp (i.e., you sit; no more arrivals, no more coffee)

Where?

Street: Landsberg-Str., house number: 16, ZIP: 50678, city: Cologne. NOTE: N O T (!) LANDSBERGER STREET (please check the map here there are two streets that sound similar). Our training is close to Severin-Str. / Severins bridge over the river Rhine.

There are a lot of bakeries around, please bring your cookies & bread. We have a kitchen with everything except food.

There will be coffee and tea, though.

Public transport

  • The tram station is called Severinstraße for lines #3 and #4. Both lines depart from the central place in Cologne called Neumarkt.
  • Bus: The also very nearly located bus stop is Rosenstraße; departure of the bus from Cologne Central Station. Bus lines are usually called 132 and 133 but check this with the driver because the lines sometimes makes slopes and turns because of bike races, parades, etc.
  • Cars:
Better do not use cars. You need a special german city ecological clearing sign to enter this part of town, and parking space is a nightmare.

'Where to Sleep

Cologne has tons of hostels. Please not that the city was build car friendly in the 1960s which means it might be pretty loud from big streets in the middle of the city. Ask your hostel host for a room not facing the largest streets if you want to avoid this hassle  ;)

'Weather

In summer, it can be very hot (unpleasantly hot, more than the 24 deg. C that some people think are "tropical"). However, it may also be chilly from one day to the other.

So use clothing layers and simple, normal student clothing. Fancy clothing does not make any sense here. Also, we do not have an elevator, so mind your shoes -- use SIMPLE clothing ;)

Slide rules for your speech:

Please prepare your slides according to the following rules. We will stop the speech if you do not stick to the rules:

  • 10 mins sharp (or less) -- not 11 minutes, not 12 minutes.
  • Use good pictures, not crappy low resolution pics.
  • Use mostly pictures, not text.
  • If text is absolutely necessary (and ONLY THEN), use max. 5 words per slides (footnotes do not count as text)
  • Do a b s o l u t e l y n e v e r (!) show a slide in the beginning that shows an overview over what you will show afterwards. Just GO and start your talk. Serious! No overview slides: they are completely idiotic and boring.
  • Stick to the maximum time sharply -- there will be a ring after 10 mins and the talk must end then.
  • Never read from the slides. Everybody in the audience can read. If you read from the slide, Mark will stop you.
  • Never read from cards, you must give your speech freely. If you read from your cards, you have to give them to Mark.
  • Large pictures! No text except if not absolutely totally necessary. Pictures! Large pictures!
  • Again, we will stop your talk if you do not follow these very simple, basic rules.
  • Please bring your talk as a pdf-file - no other formats - just .pdf!

Yes, you can!  ;)
